Wine of the week: Leese-Fitch 2015 California Sauvignon Blanc will cool you off

September is still summertime in Florida, and we can still use a cool white wine at the end of a hot day.

A bottle of Leese-Fitch 2015 California Sauvignon Blanc will chill things out nicely. This wine, widely available for about $13, is very much in the California style of the varietal — more fruit and less astringency than its cousins from Australia and New Zealand.

The winery's name, which sounds like it ought to be a hipster haberdashery, comes from the Sonoma Valley's history. It's named for the Leese-Fitch Adobe, a home in Sonoma that was built in the 1830s and is still standing.

The 2015 sauvignon blanc is made primarily with grapes grown in Lodi and fermented in stainless steel.

In the glass, the wine has a pretty silvery cast that made me feel cooler just looking at it. On the nose, the dominant note is juicy grapefruit, with an herbal accent of lemongrass.

Grapefruit steps up first on the tongue as well, along with mellow flavors of guava and ripe pear. There's just a hint of honey, making the wine a little softer and rounder than many sauvignon blancs. Its finish is moderately crisp, with a zesty touch of lime.

Pair it with a sauteed fillet of red snapper with a fresh fruit salsa or, even simpler, with a grouper sandwich. This wine would also complement a big, crisp salad with red bell peppers, blanched asparagus and hard-boiled eggs.
